How the $16 billion Adani project will benefit the Whitsundays

The Carmichael Mine will be a long way from the Whitsundays but the impact of the investment will provide major benefits our region. The Carmichael Coal Project, which includes construction of Australia’s largest coal mine, port expansion at Abbot Point north of Bowen, and a rail line linking the two, will create 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. Adani is committed to drawing on a workforce from regional centres such as Mackay and Townsville, which opens the door for Fly-In-Fly-Out workers to set up their family home in the Whitsundays. Not only will the Whitsundays be an attractive place to set up the family, it will be a great place for miners to spend their rostered days off. With thousands of new pay cheques coming into the wider region, the Whitsundays stands a lot to gain, with a stronger, more diverse, and resilient economy. Construction is set to start next year.
