The Whitsundays Clean Up at Major Award Nights

The Whitsundays are officially Australia’s best destination after dominating both the Golden Backpack Awards and the Queensland Tourism Awards at ceremonies last week.

At the Golden Backpack Awards the region took out the award for Best Destination in Australia and the Whitsundays’ Great Barrier Reef received the award for Best Visitor Attraction, also a national category.

The Queensland Tourism awards saw twelve local businesses honoured, with four taking out Gold in their respective categories. Ocean Rafting won Gold for Major Tour and Transport Operators, closely followed by Cruise Whitsundays who won Silver. Cruise Whitsundays also took home Gold for Unique Accommodation for their Reef Sleep experience. The BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort won Gold in the Caravan and Holiday Parks category, and Pinnacles Resort took out the Gold for Self Contained Accommodation. Other businesses that won Silver and Bronze awards included Tall Ship Adventures, Whitsunday Jet Ski Tours, Whitsunday Escape, Cumberland Charter Yachts and Mirage Whitsundays.

The Whitsunday tourism industry is thriving and only on the rise, with a total of 730,000 overnight visitors to the region last financial year. The Whitsunday Coast Airport was recently declared Australia’s fastest growing regional airport and with plans for a $59m expansion and international flights to commence in 2017, the region is expected to boom. The Adani Coal Mine and Abbott Point project has confirmed construction to commence next year, creating an additional 10,000 jobs, increasing demand for housing and injecting millions into the local economy. The property market is on the rise, with the best time to invest being right now as house and land prices are expected to increase at any time.

The Whitsunday region is an exciting place to be right now as we approach the beginning of what is to be a very promising 2017.
